BRANCH, N.J. (AP)   One police officer was killed and two others
were wounded yesterday by a gunman who stole a police car and led
police on a chase through several New Jersey counties, according to
broadcast reports.

Long Branch Detective Patrick King was shot by a suspect who stole
his patrol car and weapon and led State Police on a chase north to
the George Washington Bridge, according to WCBS-AM in New York.

As the chase approached the toll plaza, it was shut down to block
the road. The suspect got out of the police car and a shootout ensued,
the station reported.

One Port Authority officer was shot and critically wounded and one
New Jersey State Trooper was injured by flying glass.

The suspect was killed, WCNS reported.

New York Police Department spokesman Officer Robert Samuel said
two state troopers were taken to Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center,
as was a Port Authority police officer. Police said two other state
troopers were taken to Englewood Hospital in Fort Lee.
