Thief steals Boston Police cruiser - Ditches it - Still on loose

An unmarked Boston police car was stolen briefly yesterday when a suspect in a foot race with cops circled back and slid behind the wheel of their vehicle, taking off with lights and sirens blaring, police said.

Two officers patrolling Stanwood Street in Dorchester about 9:50 a.m. stopped a car that was reported stolen May 17 by Boston University Police, said Boston Police Department spokesman officer Eddie Chrispin.

But when the stolen car stopped, the driver didn’t, and instead fled from police on foot. The ensuing chase had cops hopping fences and running through back yards - until the suspect suddenly got a bright idea.

With officers closing behind him, the perp circled back to their police car and jumped behind the wheel, police said.

As he pulled away, one of the cops got an arm inside the car, but was forced to let go when the car barreled backward with lights flashing and sirens wailing.

The red-faced cops radioed a description of their unmarked car to dispatch, which broadcast it citywide.

The car was recovered nearby moments later with the lights still flashing, but minus one suspect.
