Bladen Co, NC - Man and Woman Overpower Deputy - Steal Gun
- Radio - Police Car - Wreck Police Car
More than 50 officers from seven agencies chased a man and woman through
Bladen County on Wednesday after the two stole a deputy’s gun and patrol car.
Investigators were still sorting out the details Wednesday night.
Bladen County Sheriff Steve Bunn said the man and woman would not give their
real names. He said the mayhem started in Fayetteville when the two robbed a
woman of her car at Cross Creek Mall.
Around 3:30 p.m., he said, a man and woman matching the description of the
carjackers robbed a White Lake motel at gunpoint. A short time later, a Bladen
County deputy saw the stolen sport utility vehicle about 10 miles north of White
Lake on U.S. 701.
The deputy turned on his car’s lights and siren, Bunn said, and the pair took
off. Bunn said the deputy chased the pair for about five miles before the SUV
crashed into the woods around the 1200 block of Old Fayetteville Road.
He said the man and woman ran into the woods, and the deputy gave chase and
caught up with them.
Bunn said the pair started fighting with the deputy and overpowered him. He
said they took the deputy’s handgun and radio and left in his patrol car. The
deputy was not injured, Bunn said.
Deputies from Bladen, Cumberland and Sampson counties, police from White
Lake, Clinton and Elizabethtown and troopers from the state Highway Patrol
converged on the area.
The man and woman got about a mile in the deputy’s car before wrecking near the
woods at U.S. 701 and N.C. 210 in Bladen County.
Bunn said the pair ran into the woods again and lawmen gave chase. A police
dog tracked the woman down about 6:30 p.m., he said, and lawmen arrested her.
Bunn said when officers got in sight of the man, he turned and pointed a gun at
one of the dog handlers. The dog attacked the man, Bunn said.
The man and woman were taken to the Bladen County Hospital and treated for
dog bites. Bunn said the injuries were not severe.
Bunn said the man and woman have been uncooperative and gave investigators fake
names.
He said the man is about 45 years old and said the woman is about 35. He said
investigators would charge the pair with a number of charges including armed
robbery, kidnapping, assaulting officers and theft. Bunn said investigators
recovered all of the stolen property.
