Man Steals Cruiser, Ditches, then calls Cab

A man stole a Birmingham police cruiser, ditched it and then called
a cab in an unsuccessful getaway attempt on Thursday.

Police were investigating the possibility that an officer fired at 
least one shot during the incident, but refused to comment on the 
gunfire. Department officials said only that the department's 
Internal Affairs Division was investigating.

Police said a West Precinct officer pulled over the man for a traffic
violation about 10 a.m. in the 900 block of Fourth Terrace West.
During the stop, the officer learned the car was stolen. The man 
then jumped in the officer's patrol car and went a short distance 
before abandoning the police cruiser. He was taken into custody
several blocks away were officers said he was waiting for a cab.

The man was taken to Cooper Green Hospital for a possible shoulder
injury, but police said he wasn't shot.
