BERRYVILLE, Ark. -- A man is in more trouble with the law after he stole a
Carroll County sheriff's deputy's car and sped away. That deputy was treated
at a hospital, as well as a second deputy who rolled his car into a ditch to
avoid a collision with another car near the end of the chase.
The sheriff says one of his deputies was helping a probation and parole officer
arrest Nathan Brown of Berryville for failure to appear in court. Brown was
taken into custody and put in the back of a patrol car with his hands in
handcuffs behind his back. While the deputy and the state officer were
collecting information, Brown managed to get his hands in front of him,
slipped into the driver's seat, took off and then slammed into the deputy, who
tried to stop him.
A chase ensued, the sheriff says, ending with Brown rolling the vehicle after he
tried to avoid a spike strip. A second deputy also rolled his car when a
motorist pulled out of a line of stopped cars, and the deputy swerved into the
ditch to prevent a crash.
No one was seriously injured. Charges are pending against Brown.
