Chase Ends in Arrest-08/17/07
Need a ride home from an all-night party? Don’t hop in the police car of the
officer who’s chasing you.
After trying several car door handles in a lot on Dunhaven Place at about 5:45
a.m. Aug. 11, two teenage boys from the D.C. area were startled by the arrival
of two police cars.
Officers began chasing the youths on foot, when one of the teens circled the
apartment building, jumped into one of the abandoned police cars and fled the
area, according to County Police Spokesman Bill Toohey.
The driver led officers on a chase from Parkville into the city – crashing
into a 2003 Mazda Protégé on Putty Hill Avenue, losing part of its tire after
hitting a curb along Harford Road, and hitting several traffic barrels on 25th
Street.
Pursuing officers were forced to slow down after the vehicle hit the barrels,
but caught up to the vehicle at 26th Street and Huntington Avenue, where it had
been abandoned on the sidewalk.
Witnesses told police that the car had traveled approximately 150 ft. on the
sidewalk. They also reported a man running down Sisson Street.
The runner fit the description of the suspect, was pursued again on foot, and
shortly turned himself in to one of the pursuing officers.
The 16-year-old, not identified by police because his is a juvenile, said he was
just trying to get home from a party he attended in Baltimore County. He was
arrested and charged with grand theft auto.
