The Aurora Police Department is
investigating an incident of Aggravated
Motor Vehicle Theft and possible
additional charges stemming from a
suspect stealing an officer’s patrol
car.
On Thursday, December 1, 2005, at about
12:15 p.m., Aurora police were called to
a residence in the 1600 block of S.
Ivory St. on a report that a male was
pounding on a vehicle outside the
caller’s home. Dispatch advised the
officers of the male’s description over
the radio when the call was aired.
One of our officers believed he had
passed by a male matching the
description of the party in the area of
E. Mexico Ave. & S. Buckley Rd. The
male began running from the officer when
contact was attempted.
The officer eventually located the male
between two homes in the 1600 block of
S. Olathe St., at about 12:30 p.m.
After leaving his vehicle on the roadway
in front of the homes, the officer began
giving the male verbal commands. The
male responded by advancing towards the
officer, demanding to be shot.
The male eventually attempted to leave
the area by taking the officer’s patrol
car.
A cover officer arrived at the location
and positioned his patrol car to prevent
the male from leaving. In the meantime,
the officer, standing outside his
occupied patrol vehicle, fired a round
that struck the driver’s side door of
the car.
The male was not struck by the round and
as more officers arrived an opportunity
was presented for them to apply use of a
taser. The taser had minimal effects on
him.
Four officers were eventually able to
physically take the male into custody.
It was determined that he was in
possession of handgun.
The male suspect sustained minor
injuries as a result of his resisting
arrest. He was treated at an area
hospital and now remains in the custody
of officers. The male suspect refuses
to provide his identity; therefore, the
release of this information will occur
once it is known.
The suspect will be held on charges of
Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft, weapons
charges and various other charges
related to his resisting arrest.
