A car thief who crashed a stolen car in Aurora tonight later stole the police
cruiser that showed up to investigate the crash.
According to police spokeswoman Detective Shannon Youngquist Lucy, the crash
occurred around 8:40 p.m. near East Iliff Avenue and South Salida Street. After
the responding officer got out of his patrol car to talk to the victims, he
began chasing the driver who caused the crash. That driver managed to double
back on foot to the scene, where he jumped into the officer's patrol car and
fled.
Lucy said in a press release that police did not chase the stolen cruiser and
found it a while later in the 12300 block of East Parklane Avenue, which is near
East 30th Avenue and Peoria Street, east of the Fitzsimons Golf Course.
The suspect ran away and was being sought by officers and dogs, Lucy said. He is
described as a Hispanic male, about 5 foot 8 inches tall, 170 to 180 pounds, and
wearing a red and white shirt
