Police sergeant assaulted, patrol car taken
January 26, 2002

A police sergeant has been assaulted and had his police
car stolen after he chased and stopped a stolen car.

The policeman was not badly hurt and his patrol car was not
damaged. Three people were arrested soon afterwards near a
pool complex.

Inspector Pieter Roozendaal, from the police communications
centre in Auckland, said the sergeant spotted the car at
11 a.m. and pursued it.

Two occupants in the car assaulted him, took the police car
and drove it back to the beach.

Mr Roozendaal said police converged on the beach and three
people were arrested in the pool complex in connection with
the taking of both cars.

The stolen car was damaged.
