Suspects escape in stolen police car
May 19, 2002
A young couple arrested in Athens on suspicion of theft escaped
from custody by stealing an unmarked police car parked outside
the police station, authorities said.
The 24-year-old man and 20-year-old woman, who were arrested
after allegedly stealing a bag from a parked car, were due
to appear in court for a preliminary hearing, police said.
But minutes before they were to be transferred to court, they
managed to slip out of the police station when the duty officer
allegedly left them alone while he completed some paperwork,
authorities said.
The two allegedly drove off in an unmarked police car which
had been parked outside the station with the keys left in the
ignition.
Police later arrested the woman after finding her at a relatives
house. They are still searching for the man.
