Police car stolen during foot chase
A routine traffic stop in Arcade early Wednesday led
to a wild foot chase and to a Jefferson police car being
stolen, according to Capt Dennis Bell of the Arcade
Police Department.
Bell said an Arcade police officer stopped a truck
about 12:15 a.m. on U.S. Highway 129 behind Parr's
Grocery Store in Arcade because it was being driven
without headlights.
The officer called for assistance because the two men
in the truck appeared to be planning to flee, Bell said.
A patrol officer from the Jefferson Police Department
arrived and the passenger in the truck fled on foot, Bell
said. The Arcade officer chased and apprehended the
man, he said.
Amid the confusion, Bell said the man in the truck
drove off but crashed into a ditch behind the store, then
ran away with the Jefferson officer chasing him on foot.
The man circled around a set of houses and a liquor
store and hopped into the Jefferson officer's cruiser,
which was unlocked and had the keys in it, he said.
The man was apprehended shortly before 2 a.m. near
King's Bridge Road in Jackson County, Bell said.
The offender, whose name was not released, is
expected to be charged with about 17 felonies,
according to Bell.
