Annapolis, MD - Drug Suspect Shot and Killed by Annapolis Officer Trying to Steal Patrol Car

(

WJZ/AP) ANNAPOLIS Annapolis police say a city officer shot and killed a drug suspect who wrestled a gun away from a state trooper last night.

Police say the suspect also dragged the trooper 300 feet with his car after trying to flee in the trooper's police cruiser.

It all happened around 10:30 p.m. The trooper tried to arrest a man after watching what looked like a drug transaction. But the man got back into his car and drove off, dragging the trooper, who had his arm caught in the door.

The car crashed, and the man fled. The trooper found him again, and the man tried to get inside the cruiser. As they struggled, the man went for the trooper's gun, and a shot was fired.

"There was mention of blood being all over the trooper's uniform from being dragged," Annapolis Police Officer Kevin Freeman tells WJZ's Sharon Lee.

The suspect got the gun away from the trooper, and an Annapolis officer arrived on the scene. The officer tried to get the gun back, but the suspect tried to raise it toward the trooper. The Annapolis officer fired a single shot that proved fatal.

"At that point our officer took action, backed up, drew his side-arm and advised for the suspect to drop the weapon. The suspect did not drop his weapon and it was at that time our officer shot the suspect," says Freeman.

The shooting is the third shooting in Anne Arundel County in the last four days. This latest one involved an Annapolis City officer, while the first two involved Anne Arundel County Police.

On Tuesday, a man was shot and wounded after confronting Anne Arundel County Police while armed with a rifle in front of his house.

Then on Thursday, two county officers tried to serve a warrant in Baltimore, but the suspect fled the scene in a car and attempted to strike the officers with the vehicle. One officer shot and wounded the suspect's head.

The Annapolis City Police Department is conducting a review of Friday night's shooting to see if it was justified.
