Allentown, PA - Wanted Suspect Steals Pennsylvania
STATE POLICE CRUISER - 50 Police Cars, Helicopter and Search Dogs Unable to Find
The search continues for a fugitive in the Lehigh Valley. Police say
the man who stole a state police car Wednesday night is armed and dangerous.
"I've never seen so many police. There had to be, you know, 50 police
cars." A swarm of police race through Lehigh County searching for a man who brazenly stole a police car. >> (NAT) Chopper >> Overhead, helicopters hovered in the night sky ... on the ground it was an all out manhunt. >> (2:09)
"They had dogs, they had guns drawn (BUTT) (2:25) "Through the night you could see them going up the hill with their spot lights." >> Authorities say it all started when a state police trooper pulled over on I-78 to help the driver of a
"disabled car." Jeff Torchia was in rush hour traffic and saw it. >> (:54) "I saw a police car on the side of the road -- on the shoulder - - right before you get on Summit Lawn helping a guy change a tire. It looked like he had a flashlight
and the guy was squatted down." >> That guy was Ralph Berry. When state police ran his information they found out he's a wanted man -- a fugitive from the New York City Police. They say Ralph Berry is a 39- year-old black man
with black hair and brown eyes. He stands 5 feet-10-inches tall and weighs 230 pounds. On 78 ... the trooper was prepared to arrest Berry ... but had to speak with the tow truck driver beforehand. It was during that brief moment
that Berry saw his chance to escape. He sped off down 78 East ... in the
police cruiser, then dumped the car in Upper Saucon Township and fled on foot.
