Suspect in violent Albuquerque carjacking arrested
Friday, January 24, 2008
City, county and federal law enforcement agents arrested a man suspected of
carjacking and other crimes as he appeared to be trying to steal a deputy's car,
authorities say.
John Paul Marquez, 29, was taken into custody Thursday night at an apartment
complex near Candelaria Road and Adams Street Northeast in an effort that
included the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department, Albuquerque Police
Department and the FBI, said Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Erin Kinnard
Thompson.
At the time, agents believed Marquez was preparing to steal a Sheriff's
Department surveillance unit, Thompson said. He was armed but was taken into
custody without incident, she said.
Marquez is a suspect in a number of crimes including the armed carjacking and
assault of a man Wednesday, court records show. He is being held at Metro
Detention Center in lieu of $500,000 bond.
