The routine stop of a suspected drunk driver and his passenger resulted in a RCMP cruiser being stolen and then rolled — but not before the arresting officer was struck by the suspect’s vehicle.

The bizarre incident occurred on Thursday about 5 p.m. on the Sunchild First Nation Reserve northwest of Rocky Mountain House, said Cpl. Wayne Oakes of RCMP headquarters in Edmonton said on Friday.

An officer arrested a suspected drunk driver and the passenger for outstanding warrants.

While the officer was busy attending to the security of the driver’s minivan, the police cruiser was stolen by one of the arrested men.

The minivan was then rammed and the parked van hit the officer, causing minor injuries, Oakes said.

The stolen cruiser sped away on the Sunchild Reserve road with both suspects.

It was located later by the officer. It had rolled and one of the suspects was still in the rear seat, where he had been placed by the officer.

The officer then chased and caught the other suspect, who was spotted entering a wooded area.

Both suspects were taken to a hospital in Rocky for treatment of injuries suffered in the rollover.

The officer was also treated for injuries and released, Oakes said.

Charges are pending against both suspects.

The entire incident is being reviewed by the RCMP, Oakes said.
