Prisoner flees in patrol car 06-20-2007
From the Plainview Daily Herald

Elijah Beck is awaiting arraignment at the Hale County jail on a variety of charges after he allegedly escaped custody Tuesday in an Abernathy patrol car.

Beck was being held this morning at the Hale County jail on charges of escape causing bodily injury, theft of property, resisting arrest, criminal mischief and possession of drug paraphernalia.

While reportedly being transported in the rear of a patrol car about 7 p.m. Tuesday, Beck allegedly kicked out a rear passenger window.

As an Abernathy police officer slowed his patrol unit from highway speeds on I-27 north of Abernathy, Beck jumped from the vehicle.

When the officer began his foot pursuit, the handcuffed prisoner apparently was able to double-back and flee in the patrol unit. Beck was apprehended about two miles west of I-27 on FM 54 by Abernathy, Hale Center and Hale County peace officers.
