St. Louis Co, MO - Handcuffed Suspect Steals Police Car -
Officer Injured - Shots Fired - Crashed Police Car
CLAYTON, Mo. - A St. Louis County police officer and a suspect were
injured early Wednesday after the handcuffed suspect was able to steal a police
car.
Names of both the officer and the suspect were not released following the
incident that began at 2:30 a.m. when the suspect was pulled over for suspicion
of driving while intoxicated.
The suspect was handcuffed with his hands behind his back and placed in the
passenger seat of the squad car, a police spokeswoman said. As the officer
was speaking to a tow truck driver, the suspect was able to place the handcuffs
in front of him, move into the driver's seat and steal the police car.
Officers from other agencies gave chase, and the squad car was stopped in
Kinloch. Police said the man then placed the car in reverse and rammed a Cool
Valley police car. Officers from agencies police have not identified then fired
shots at the suspect, who apparently was not hit.
The man drove away again and wrecked the police car a short time later, then
ran. He was captured after a foot pursuit.
The officer who made the original stop had leg injuries from trying to pull the
suspect from the vehicle as it was beginning to flee. He was treated at a
hospital.
The suspect was injured when he wrecked the squad car, and was
hospitalized with undisclosed injuries
